THE OAK AND THE ASH.
This is a song of the seventeenth century. The air is from Queen Elizabeth's " Virginal Book," where it is entitled "The Quodling's Delight." The hero of Scott's "Kob Roy," speaking of his old Northumbrian nurse, says i " I think I see her look around on the brick walls and narrow streets which presented themselves from our windows, as she concluded with a sigh the favorite old ditty, which I then preferred, and—why should I not tell the truth t—which I still prefer to all the opera airs ever minted by the capricious brain of an Italian Mus.
